Section II: Linux, Breakfast of Hackers
Chapter 9: Why Linux?
We reveal the best-kept secret of cyberspace: why Linux is
the operating system of choice for breaking into computers from
across the Internet. It is now easy to install, easy to get online
with it, and insanely fun and powerful. Also, almost every program
for breaking into computers runs on Linux, and only on Linux.
Chapter 10: How to Get Linux and Windows on the Same Computer
Most people don't want to go cold turkey. They want to keep
their Windows computer, and they don't want to buy a second computer
to run Linux. This chapter shows several ways to get Windows
and Linux to share the same computer. We even show how to hide
Linux for those many kids whose parents are afraid to let them
try. (Hint: boot floppy.)
We compare the Linux distributions, and recommend those that
are easiest to install and have the best technical support. We
show several ways to overcome an occasionally brutal hurdle to
installation, which is to get a graphical desktop running.
Chapter 11: How to get Online with Linux
The single biggest stumbling block to using Linux is how to
get online. This is caused by those infamous Winmodems, which
only work with Windows.
Within the next year or two, most commercial Linux distributions
should be upgraded to support Winmodems. In the meantime, this
chapter shows how to install a modem that will be sure to work
with Linux. We give simple instructions on how to set up your
modem and get online.
Chapter 12: The Bastard Penguin from Heck
We reveal the basics of how to use Linux to attack other computers,
and how to defend your own.
