How to Turn Your Win95/98
Computer into a Hacker Box (continued)
Here's how to fix this:
1) Click " image," then " stretch/skew."
2) Click the " horizontal" box and enter 49. As Figure
2 shows, it will shrink horizontally and look horrible in Paint,
but great on your start up or shut down screens.
3) Click the " vertical" box and enter 83.
4) When you save it, set attributes to 320x400 pixels. Name it
c:\logo.sys, c:\windows\logow.sys, or c:\windows\logos.sys depending
on which screen
you want, and save it as a 256 color graphic.
5) If this doesn't work, here's the easy way to save it so Windows
will use it for the proper screen. Cut your graphic from Paint.
Open the appropriate logo file. Paste your graphic on top. Make
sure to save it as a 256 color graphic.
You can do the same things with other graphics programs, so
long as you save your images as .bmp files with the right file
names in the right directory, size them 320x400 pixels and 256
colors. Or paste them into the existing logo files.
How to Make an Animated Start up Screen
The Win95/98 start up screen has an animated bar at the bottom.
But once you replace it with your own graphic, that animation
is gone. However, you can make your own animated start up screen
using the shareware program BMP Wizard. One download site for
this goodie is: http://www.windows95.com/apps.
Another option is to download LogoMania, which automatically
resizes any bitmap to the correct size for your logon and logoff
screens and can add animation, too. You can find it at ftp://ftp.zdnet.com/pcmag/1997/0325/logoma.zip.
Or you may
download a shareware animation program, Microangelo, from http://www.impactsoft.com
Another one is WinHack, at http://www.winsite.com.
How to Change the Startup Screen if You Are on a LAN
Is your Win95/98 box on a local area network (LAN)? It isn't
as easy to change your logos, as the network may override your
changes. But there is a way to thwart the network. If you aren't
afraid of your boss seeing " K-Rad Doomsters of the Apocalypse"
here's how to customize your bootup graphics:
1) Find the program " regedit.exe."
2) It isn't there? You sysadmin must not trust you. Get it from
your home Win95/98 box and take it to work on a disk (it's only
118 KB in Win95).
3) Run regedit. Click " Local Computer," then "
Network," then " Logon" and then " Logon
banner." It will bring up the current logon graphic.
4) Alter it.
