How to Turn Your Win95/98
Computer into a Hacker Box (continued)
When you are ready to save your new wallpaper, name it something
like c:\windows\evilhaxor.bmp (substituting your filename for
" evil haxor" -unless you like to name your wallpaper
" evil haxor." ) Your new graphics file must be in
.bmp format and end with " .bmp." (or in .dib format
and end with " .dib" ) Paint will put your graphic
into .bmp format automatically. Next, set Windows to display
your new wallpaper:
1) Click " start," then " settings," "
control panel," " display," then "background."
2) You are now ready to choose your wallpaper. You have your
pick of any .bmp or .dib file on your computer. Click "
browse" and in the " file name" box, type in the
name of your hacker wallpaper. Then, if you have just one image
you want to display, click " center." If you have a
small graphic you want repeated all over the screen, click "
tile." Then click " OK."
Elite Way to Make Your Own Startup and Shutdown Graphics
The trouble with making your hacker start up and shut down
screens by editing one of the existing Win95/98 logo files is
that they only allow you to use their original colors. In the
case of Win98, there is no logo.sys file to edit for your own
startup graphic. So if you really want to customize the startup
screen in Win98, or go wild with any colors you want, open Paint
again.
1) Click " Image,"
2) Click " Attributes."
3) This brings up a box in which you can set " Width"
to 320 and " Height" to 400. Make sure under "
Units" that " Pixels" is selected.
Remember to save the file as c:\logo.sys for your start up
logo, or c:\windows\logow.sys and or c:\windows\logos.sys for
your shut down screens. Make sure you save them as 256 color
graphics.
What if you have a better graphics program than Paint? For the
start up and shut down logos you still must set width to 320,
height to 400, and set the units as pixels. In addition, you
must make sure to save these as uncompressed bitmap (bmp) files.
Paint does all this automatically.
If you want some really fabulous stuff for your start up and
shut down screens, you can steal even more graphics from your
favorite hacker pages on the Web. But it's more difficult than
setting up cool wallpaper. Here's how to make your start up and
shut down graphics actually look good. For some dadgummed reason,
the start up and shut down screen programs take those 320x400
pixels bitmaps, which are taller than wider, and turn them into
graphics shaped like your monitor screen, wider than taller.
The result? That start up graphicof Madonna now looks like Rosanne.
