How to Turn Your Win95/98/ME Computer into a Hacker Box (from The Happy Hacker book, fourth edition)

I was kinda bored at school, so after impressing my friends ... with some Email spoofing, I printed out every chapter of the GTMHH on the laser printer there...I just thought you might want to know that the GTMHH is infiltrating yet more young impressionable minds... AHAHAHAHAHAHA- HAH!

You may be interested to know that my school has shut down its Internet connection indefinitely. The cause? No, we weren't infected by some sUpEr 31337 haxor's virus. In fact it was the administrators, them- selves, that shut it down! They were a bit concerned that the most use it was getting was for students who were eager to print out all of the GtMHH.

These folks are talking about the Guides to (mostly) HarmlessHacking that are plastered over so many hacker Web sites. Welcome to the excitement! Want to start your hacking career with something fun, easy, legal, and that will make your friends' hair stand on end? You can do it with Windows 95/98. Some hackers call it Winblows. Or Windoze. They make fun of us for using it. Too bad for them. Us real hackers like to mess with many operating systems. Since Win 95 and 98 are the most widely used operating systems in the world, let's learn how to make it sit up and bark like a dog!

Besides, Windows NT computers are coming into widespread use as Internet servers. If you want to learn how to hack NT, using your home computer running Windows 95/98 is a good place to start.

In this chapter you will learn how to:

  • Make your own Windows 95/98 start up, logoff and background screens
  • Create animated start-up screens-make your friends' eyeballs pop!
  • How to change start-up screens when you are on a LAN
  • Customize desktop icons
  • How to get your boring Windows graphics back
