Web Intrusions
By Martin Stone, Newsbytes
The 19-year-old co-founder of a hacker group known as Global
Hell faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine after
pleading guilty to breaking into White House and U.S. Army Web
sites.
A report in the Wall Street Journal Thursday said Patrick
W. Gregory of Houston, a high-school dropout known on the Net
as "MostHateD," was one of the founders of the Global
Hell online cybergang, and pleaded guilty to a single count of
conspiracy to commit telecommunications wire fraud and computer
hacking in Texas U.S. District Court.Gregory was among those
netted during nationwide antihacker raids launched last May by

March 29, 2000 -- One of the two leaders of the legendary
cybergang globalHell caused between $1.5 and $2.5 million in
losses by cracking web sites and making fraudulent use of a community
college's teleconferencing system, according to stipulations
in an plea agreement 19 year-old Patrick Gregory reached with
federal prosecutors in Dallas. The plea, originally scheduled
for today, has been postponed until April 5th. Wednesday night,
the Houston Chronicle reported that the canceled appearance was
a result of Gregory's arrest on unrelated charges of burglary
and unauthorized use of a vehicle the night before. Full story

The judge decided to sentence Gregory
to twenty-six months in prison and pay $154,529.86
in restitution. It doesn't look like Gregory will be able
to play on heartstrings like Kevin Mitnik. After all, Mitnick
has never been known to commit crime for profit.
This is the same MostHated that MSNBC reporter Brock Meeks claimed had gone straight and
was going to be a legitimate computer security consultant. Read

gang and all the trouble they have gotten into. He's also
the same fellow who was involved in a threat
to burn down the offices of Antionline last year.
Mixter sentenced
for computer crime
April 3, 2000 -- The 21-year-old hacker with the alias
"Mixter", who allegedly created the program used for
the crash of several big-name sites in February, was sentenced
late Friday by the Hanover regional court to a 6-month youth
prison sentence.
The sentence was suspended to a two-year period of parole.
Prosecution points included "computer sabotage" and
"spying for data" and other attacks on businesses in
1998. The damage was estimated at DEM 34,000 ($16,500).Full

Mixter recently won a $10,000 award from Kroll O'Gara for his essay on preventing
Distributed Denial of Service (DoS) attacks. He wrote the "Tribe
Flood Network" Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) program,
and is the author of 54 DoS exploits offered for download at
that site. It's painful to see a talented young person throw
away his career over computer crime.
